“There is no message for Iran.
President Trump’s remarks came after Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif announced on July 1 that the country had exceeded the limit of 300 kg of enriched uranium reserves under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), or
JCPOA was signed in 2015 between Iran and 6 major powers (P5+1) including the US, Russia, China, UK, France and Germany.
The nuclear agreement signed by the US under former President Barack Obama clearly stipulates that Iran is only allowed to enrich uranium at a rate of 3.67%, much lower than the 90% level needed to make nuclear weapons and also lower.
Foreign Minister Zarif’s statement marked Iran’s first major step out of the nuclear agreement’s commitments since President Trump withdrew the US from the agreement more than a year ago.
Foreign Minister Zarif cited a section of the Iran nuclear agreement, which stipulates a mechanism for countries to resolve disagreements.
“As soon as the E3 comply with their obligations, we will reverse course,” Mr. Zarif said, referring to the three European powers participating in the Iran nuclear deal: Britain, France and Germany.
In early May, Iran announced that it would reduce some of its commitments in the 2015 nuclear agreement, while giving Europe 60 days to implement commitments related to the oil and banking sectors.
Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which oversees Iran’s nuclear program under the deal, confirmed in Vienna that Tehran had violated limits on the amount of enriched uranium set by the deal.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also sounded a warning yesterday after Iran was accused of `breaking` the nuclear agreement.
“The Iranian government has taken new steps to promote the country’s nuclear ambitions.
Iran’s new move related to its nuclear program comes in the context of increasingly tense relations between this country and the US.
