(Dan Tri) – The court ordered a Chinese woman to repay her ex-husband’s family more than 1.45 million USD, after the man committed suicide because his ex-wife was blackmailing him in 2017.

SCMP reported that Zhai Xinxin was ordered by the court to return assets worth more than 10 million yuan (1.45 million USD) to her ex-husband Su Xiangmao’s family.

In the incident six years ago, Su, the founder of a technology company in Beijing, committed suicide by jumping from a high-rise building.

Su’s family sued Zhai in 2018, asking the court to overturn Su’s transfer of assets to her and for Zhai to return any cash he gave her, Red Star News reported.

Su, 43, met Zhai, 37, in March 2017 through a matchmaking service in Beijing.

The Chaoyang District Court in Beijing concluded that in the 110 days from the first meeting until the divorce from Su, Zhai received from her ex-husband a car, jewelry and more than 3 million yuan (

Zhai argued in court that the items and money were `engagement gifts`, but the court rejected this explanation.

Text messages read in court revealed that on one occasion after they argued, Su asked Zhai for forgiveness and she replied: `Aren’t you flirting with me? Please transfer me 50,000 yuan each

In another exchange, Su asked Zhai: `Can you forgive me one last time? I can transfer you 50,000 yuan now. I will transfer you another 200,000 yuan tomorrow

In the divorce agreement, Zhai forced Su to sign an agreement to buy her an apartment on Hainan Island and give her 10 million yuan in cash.

In his suicide note, Su said that Zhai threatened to go to the police station to report that Su had evaded taxes and that his company was operating illegally.

`Su must guarantee to pay off the outstanding amount within 120 days from the date of divorce. If he refuses to pay or delays payment, he must pay Zhai a fine of 100,000 yuan per day`

In his suicide note, Su admitted feeling regretful about signing the divorce agreement.

The court concluded that Zhai’s extortion contributed to Su’s suicide and that the divorce agreement was invalid because Zhai forced her ex-husband to sign.

The court’s ruling was viewed more than 140 million times on Weibo last year, with tens of thousands of comments siding with the court.

`The final conclusion has been reached. I have been following this case for a long time. Su Xiangmao should feel relieved in heaven. But he paid a heavy price,` said one user
